Hi Guys,
I was wondering if anybody had some advice on which electric motor brand offers the best value for money. I will need at least a 55lb bow mount for my boat as it is quite heavy.

for money value.. get a motorguide bowmount.. the cablesteer on the motorguides is super responsive and great.. but they are a freshwater model.. but around $890 for the bowmount.. but for another $15 u can stick a sacrificial anode on and with some care and cleaning up after each use should last as long as a standard saltwater model
a Minn Kota.. are great motors.. but they are servo driven and slower to maneuvre.. but they are a saltwater model and a thousand dollars more then a motorguide..
but it all depends on the wallet and peace of mind.. ive got a motorguide and im happy with it and my boat is like yours.. really heavy.. but its got alot of grunt

We have a Minnkota 36lb thrust cable steer. Our boat is also fairly heavy, and sometimes we do have to use the max speed of 5. Our model is an All Terrain, which is a fresh water model, and like Zeeke, we make sure we give it a good rinse in fresh water and lube after every couple of outings. So far no problem. We paid $700 for ours brand new. I shopped around and found a place that had this one sitting in stock for a while, so were happy to see it go.
My advice is to shop around and see if anyone has an electric that has been sitting for a while and want to get rid of it. Ex-demo stock will see the price reduced by quite a bit.
Hope that helps
Mim
Whilst the motor guides are a good cheap alternative it’s a Minn Kota for me. Sure it costs more but it’s designed for saltwater unlike the motor guide which is for freshwater use.
Minn Kotas have a lifetime warranty on the shaft, which is in fact carbon fibre. Motor guide has no warranty on the shaft, which is in fact steel. Steel + saltwater & snags, mmmmmm
Now if you have ever fished out of a boat you will know that your electric bangs up against things when you are retrieving lure stuck in snags or trees etc. Minn Kotas cost more but they are a better unit for sure.
