Has anyone had much success with streamer patterns???

Where I fish on the flats the bream seem to feed alot on schools of baitfish & I was wondering if anyone else had used streamers to catch them them?

I remember an article where someone said because of faster retrieve styles used with streamer flies they weren't the best (because of breams tail nipping habits), but what about flies with more movement like zonkers that you would strip slower???

The BMS would be a stremer wouldnt it? The BMS was originally a the Bulli Merri Special for dams down here in Vic. The fly was designed to resemble some galaxis fish.

I think stremers are very useful i have mainly used BMS and woolly buggers (its not really a streamer is it?). I have had very limited sucess on tube like designs such as streamers of english proportions.

I think if you slow down the stremers more like a trickle it should do the trick. The main issues are the bream biting the tail. you can design the fly on a long shank and have the proportions of the fly slightly different. If you move the hook back towards the tail (long shanks) you can get thoes tail munch bream.

I found tailor chopping at the end of my flies and no hook ups. I tried slowing it down and then speeding it up, a big pause and so on, zip. The big break through was when i move the design backwards more towards the tail or beyond the tail. Much better hook ups.

I've caught heaps on hardbody lures on the flats and drops but can't crack em on the fly....

Got the night time thing down pat though, using crazy charlies...

Started out fishing baitfish patterns for bream and still use them a lot especially at night.

Dark body Hamills Killers on a size #4 longshank freshwater hook work very well as does the NZ tie of Mrs Simpson, Cragis Nightime and Black Shadow. For best results have found that the slower the better on a floating or very slow sinker intermediate line is the go. A figure 8 style retrieve is spot on. If you get a couple of tail nips just stop moving the fly altogether and start again with a couple of short sharp strips, this seams to promote a good solid hit.

Yep, streamers and baitfish patterns work a treat, give it heaps.
