Does anyone have, used, or know about,

the "Open Top Viking Pacer, 2.7Mtrs" sounds a tad short altho this may suit my car more than then 3.3M

At the moment i am thinking of the Eskepee(spelling) but this Viking has poped up second hand and well if its suitable i may look at buying one.

info guys?

Hi Sandworm,

as you may know I've been looking at Canoes / Kayaks for a while too...at the moment I'm leaning towards sit-in instead of sit- on.

I do a lot of fishing in winter on the Patto and it can get bloody cold. I think I'd rather not get myself or my gear too wet.

I've narrowed my choice down to down to either a small canadian type canoe or a small kayak (Australis Bass, Perception Minnow) possibly with a spray deck.

Still looking for one at the right price.

I am leaning towards the sit-on due to more room and easyer to move etc, plus easyer to get at your gear. As you say though its going to be wet and cold!

i am also looking at a sit in to keep options open.

hi guys, i looked for months! bought a sit- on and love it.

You definately get a wet arse, but a wet or dry suit should keep you warm.Plugging the scupper holes also helps. After this weekend we should all catch up down the Patto after work or on the weekend. The guy who makes the Pacer is in Seaford and he lets you take one for a couple of hours to see if you like it(no charge). He also has a longer one called the Espree. Personally I think the Pacer is too small. You may get too tired paddling into the wind and current.
The minnow is also a good sit-in.

G'day guys

I've got a minnow & it's pretty good keeps ya dry but it can get a little cramped after a while. I guess sit-ins & sit-ons both have their pros & cons

you do stay dry tho dont you? with a splash cover?

Also .... DOh forgot what i was going to say (got the fishing show on my walkman at work, it muck's me up:)

ahhh thats it! how does this compare to a sit on top for say the bay where you have more waves,

is one better than the other in river or waves?

I guess i could attach a crate to the sit in and keep my stuff in that?

(think the advantage in the sit in is dryer, the sit-on is more storage room, and some say safer if you flip it - eg not stuck in it)

G'day sandworm

I dont use a spray deck but it probably would be a good idea in winter when ya just dont want to get wet at all.
The lip that the spray deck attaches to stops most waves, boat wash, chop from coming in but I still get wet off the paddle.
I reakon your right about a sit-on being safer mate cause it would also be a lot more bouyant than my minnow...

One thing with some sit-ins...

The scupper holes are at the highest point in the seat wells so you are always sitting in water (designer must have been a rocket scientist!). Others are okay with the holes at the lowest point so water doesn't have to run uphill. You still get wet but your not sitting in a puddle.

well guys it has almost reached the 15th of the month were i have permision to buy the kayak and other bits needed!

so i need to work out what i will buy.

I think at this stage i will go with the sitontop only because it looks to have more storage??

but in winter that wet bum will be a huge pain!

whats better in the bay? sit in or sit on? this could determine what i get as most the time it will not be dead smooth water i'm fishing (eg rivers)

will be lakes and the like inc bays

hi sandworm, just got back from lake tyers. had an absolute blast.

caught 3 nice flatties, 6 tailor 2 pinkies no bream. ended up paddling about 15klms on a wind chop lake and found the sit on top handled it beautifully.

i spoke with a guy who had a sit in sea kayak and he had to strap everything to the deck. he thought my set up looked better for fishing than his.

this was my longest outing to date and would have gone further but had to spend time with the family.

how did you carry the kayak roof?
looks like i will roof mine (poor car)

also, did ya get wet, and cold?

I cant wait to get out on the water

shoey

i've found that if you continually get in and out you get cold very quickly.

first day was in shorts and tshirt.it rained, i got wet, but was not cold.
second day launched at 6am. wore tracksuit pants under plastic pants and a tshirt. only got a wet bum, and ended up wishing i'd worn shorts.
carried it down on rola roof racks.

ahhhhh so yu wear cloths on the kayak i assumed that a wetsuit would be needed as it was going to be really wet.

i'm rather small and a very light in the weight department so i get cold easy!

maybe i should just go buy one and start having fun!

i'll get a wet suit i think also to keep me warm

i think your'e right, get one and start having fun.

if your a bit smaller i would recommend the ocean kayak 'scrambler'. weighs about 20kgs and 3.9 m long. the guy at sandringham has a special of $975@ for kayak, vest, and paddle. or 'Out There ' down at phillip island . he did a great price for me and threw in a DohDohDohDohty paddle for free(i still use it, it does a good job).

let me know if you get one and we'll go for a fish.

i will look into that but the only prob is that will cost me about $300 more than before
i am already at $1700 if i use that kayak :)

is it $300 better than the escapee? what makes it a better kayak? speed and balance???

Hi guys,
I went through the decision traumas you have been some years ago.
I fished from a sit on top for 3 years. i got it because I thought I would paddle out in the surf to troll etc.
Ended up doing much more in the river/estuary situation-so now have a Coleman Canadian with a 40lb thrust electric. heaps more space, storage and area to deal with angry 8lb flathead (other than between my legs). I have fitted a padded high back seat and can now fish in comfprt for hours concentrating on casting nand not paddling into position all the time.

yeah, how much is the coleman?

Sandworm
08-04-2003, 01:58 AM
the price i gave is inc roof racks and kayak rounts paddle jackets etc etc

after looking at the ocean kayak it is only $50 more and they both look very similar so i will look at getting it. I am getting one after the 18th of this month :)

cant wait!

shoey
08-04-2003, 03:26 AM
the escapee looked very bulky to me.

i didnt test it so cant give you a diffinitive answer. i would have bought the scrambler if i didnt buy the longer scupper.

i did see 2 scramblers at different times in the trading post, however at the time had no funds. i think they are more common than most and being a proven product, people tend to hang on to them. the two i saw were $600 and $650 without padles so not a great difference to a new one($150-$200). if you can wait i recon more will come up. better in your pocket.

yeah that looks like a good kayak now after more looking into it.

been hard to look at them with work dam it!

they said it can seat 2 people ?!?!?!

this also looks like a good one for sure/port phillip bay??

Shoey where are these for sale? sandy, does capacity sell them? i 'thought' i saw the same name there but could be wrong

shoey

i think the only ones that stock ocean kayak are the guy at sandringham, and the guy at phillip islland.

both numbers are in the trading post at the moment. the guy at phillip island has my vote. did me a good deal for cash, didnt bully me into a sale and threw in an old paddle for nicks. he also stoks other brands.

worth a trip down there.

if you go down there, mention youre a mate of Gerard's and
that i recently bought a scupper for fishing, might get a couple of bucks off.

shoey,
The list of kayaks are :
(sit in)
Perception Acadia - seen them around $1K but also found for $700 on special.

This look like a nice kayak but maybe not as much storage as the siton tops

what is your opinion? (having fished a few times now)

the Acadia,(mail order also so i cant try it first)

or
(sit on top)
ocean kayak scrambler about $700 i think

If the perception has the room that might be good for me in the rivers and also keep me dry, i am only 5'8 170cm tall so i should have the room its just tackle i worry about

http://members.optusnet.com.au/~anvil59/seqkf/rigs.html
(set up of a Acadia V's a sit on top)

anyone else have a opinion on these kayaka
(Acardia V the ocean scrambler)

is the link to this kayak and its price, i wonder why its so cheap

there is one in the trading post for $700 3yrs old so this is very cheap for new.... unless there is somthing i aint picking up on

shoey

the arcadia is meant to be a very nice kayak. a couple of guys up in qld have them and are very happy with them.

it would probably have been my choice for a sit in.

out there at phillip island also stocks them, however i would have no worries about buying one 3 years old. ring him up and beat him down over the phone before you drive all that way.

have a look at the arcadias on this site
http://www.aus-kayak-fishing.com/ or scroll back to tony's reply.he has the link on his reply.

i'm not too computer literate so i dont know how to attach the link.

well i have talked to the place in syd and the price is only if you buy 3 tings they will sell for $699 otherwise its $999

the paddle is
perception NW passage Quik lock carbon twill paddle (what ever the hell that is!!! ($229.50) (normally $327)
and Perception Harmony PFD $97.95 (normally $139)

or i could buy the kayak, and 2 small dry bags at $6 :)

but i still need the PFD, and paddle

does anyone know if these ones above are good and should i get these or try get cheaper ones and only buy the kayak

Sandworm
10-04-2003, 10:43 PM
I think i will order the Kayak and some dry bags, then get a paddle (cheaper) down here, and the PFD well i could buy one of theres or get one down here

mate, i'd take your missus for a drive to phillip island over the weekend.

he wont bullDohDohDohDoh you or sell you things you dont need. he gave me a paddle for free and i bought a second hand pfd from him.

get on the water and then worry upgrading.

he also has used sit ons and sit ins i think. i cant recommend him enough, he wants your repeat business so he is not concerned about ripping you off by selling you things you dont need.

thats my opinion anyway.good luck!

i beleve you but that only problem was he wants $1095 for the perception Acadia, and the syd shop will sell for $699 so its making it hard!

i just need to decide between the sit in and sit on.

i'm happy with the sit in, but it "may" be a problem if i flip it and the ocean scrambler said it could sit 2 people if i used it for fun in summer , ahh well i need to hurry up and buy one!!!

want to use it very very soon

g'day guys,
this is my first post in this new forum.just been reading thru what you guys have written & thought i'd add my 2 cents worth.i have 2 kayaks both sit-ins,one is a phantom the other a trekker.both are sports boats not made for fishing but what the hell.if you are fishing rivers or impoundments go the sit-in.its warmer, dryer and not likely to tip unless side on to boat chop or something.sit-ons are the go for bay/ocean unless you are very experienced.i rolled my sit-in about half a k out from the island off hamelin bay and although a strong swimmer had a hell of a time dragging the bastard to the shore.a sit-in kayak is unbelieveably heavy when full of water and gear.dont recommend a wet suit you will get real hot even on a chilly day, suggest a thermal long sleeved shirt, steamer wetsuit over the top if desired but better still is a kayak kagool,a lightweight plastic raincoat instead of steamer.go with a spray deck but get used to the pull tab a where it is,nothing worse than being under water groping around for a tab!!.slip-on wet suit booties are useful as well, get a pfd that suits your kayak and build.get plenty of practice in your boat to get used to it and paddle up wind at the beginning of your trip and come back with the wind!

shoey
14-04-2003, 05:37 AM
good points matty!

i dont envy you trying to drag a full kayak back in. that was one of the reasons i chose a sit on, as well as being able to take my kids on the back for a bit of fun.

sandworm, i'm deffinately going down to patto this weekend, so the offer still stands if you want a bash. i'm looking at possibly friday morning to catch the change of low tide. let me know if you feel like it.

I have ordered the Perception Acadia - despite the dangers of a flip/sink and other matters I think it was a great hull at a great price. I feel it should do for the fishing (looks like i will use the boat a lot also now) and will be great to paddle in

so thanks heap for the help
esp. shoey! great advise etc

as per friday i will get back to you, if i have the boat i will try my best altho it looks at this stage i will be booked out with family easter things :(

*questions soon on where to put fishing rod holders etc etc*
