View Full Version : Choosing my line?

G'day,
I'm buying an Okuma Alumina Al-15 from Simmsy.
It's already spooled with 6lb Fireline. But I'm going to take that off and wrap it around a spare spool, save it for my little brother. So he can use it when he starts plastics fishing for bream. He's getting my old Penn Accord when I get the Okuma.
After doing so, I'll have two spools to spool with line. I'm looking for some 6lb line and some 4lb line. I'm looking for your opinions and recomendations.
If you recommend something, please jot down the details. The diammeter of the line. How many yards/ meters per spool. Available colours if you know of any. All that type of stuff.
I was thinking Crystal Fireline, I'll be looking for either 2lb- 4lb Crystal Fire line. For a few bucks extra it seems better than normal Fireline. I also don't know the diammeter of the 3lb and 4lb lines. I think the 4lb is 0.10mm. Guessing that the 3lb line would be 0.08mm than.
Nothing too expensive like that Bass Systems Hard Orange line, I think thats the name of it. It's $60!
Cheers, Nugget.

I've been very impressed with Sufix Matrix Pro, and the new Sufix Performance looks even nicer!

Wow! you're slow aren't you lol. That wasn't even a minute! I checked my PM list when the e-mail appeared because I thought to myself, "nah only been posted for about twenty seconds!"
I'll have a look at the Sufix now. I quite liked it. I used the Sufix- X, 25lb Copper Braid at Wallaroo, than lost it all on a Kingfish lol.

On the website I just looked it up on. It says that the lowest pound line it goes to is eight. Thats way too high, even for my leaders lol.

yeah, I'm pretty quick...You'd be suprised at how thin the 8lb is, MUCh thinner than the 4lb Rapala Squidgy braid i was using before. Once i got over the fact i was using such "heavy" braid for bream i really started to like it, I got a full spool of 250m on a Shimano Twin Power 2500, and the 8lb breaking strain doesnt mean you need to fish it like 8lb all the time, but it really helps when your battling bigger by-catches.

Now I'm interested.
And yeah, that was incredibly fast. I wonder if your name would have anything to do with it, lol.
What's it's diammeter?

If this came in spools of 125yrds- 175yrds I'd buy this for sure.

It's used as a leader, but I use flurocarbons for my main line, I find them alot nicer to cast.

Suffix performance for me. Finally got a spool of 6 and 30lb and so far the 6 is awsome. Its very round and ties know beautifully. I cant get oevr how much attention people pay to diameter of line. Sure thin is good but the thinest line wont nessasarily cast the furthest. Also most thin line is fussion braid which makes it flat and it cuts into your leader screwing up your knots.
So maybe look at true braids not fusion

G'day MiSh,
MiSh:
"I cant get over how much attention people pay to diameter of line. Sure thin is good but the thinest line wont nessasarily cast the furthest."
It's not that I want the thinnest line, I just want something I can spool a decent amount of on, I only want about 100m of line on the little Okuma.

Sufix seems to be getting a pretty good hiding in this thread. I'll have another look, see if I can find it in 6lb. Does it come in any colours? I'll send you a PM after.
MiSh:

Alot of people I've been talking to have recommended go for a true braid and not fusion. For many reasons, not just because of their nots that they tie.
Thanks MiSh,
Nugget.

Suffix performance comes in 6lb but suffix matrix pro only goes down to 8. Matrix pro is REALLY thin, even thiner than the 6lb performance but its no where near as round. Although it quotes the diameter of this line thiner than the perfrmance braid it might not be in real terms. Because its flat they always measure the diameter on the flat part of the line so its super fine in this spot but not on the edge of the line.
You will easily get 100m of sufix performance on your reel. It comes in bright yellow and you will be able to pick up a 150m spool for under $40
Also to aswer your PM most braid break above thier breaking strain. However this is not as important as how well it ties knots.
For example if you test 6lb fireline it would break close to 10lb. But once you tie a knot it is going to break at alot less. And because we always use a leader this is where the line will break so this is where you want your line to be the strongest.
Rounder braids wont cut into your leader as much and tie better knots. Meaning your line wont snap at the leader so easy

Yo-Zuri Hybrid s my tried and trusted mono, Love the stuff, especially the 'smoke' coloured one, seems to flouresce when you see it against the water. It's a very nice casting line and has incredibly low memory for a mono. Plus it has a Flurocarbon coating on it so it's got long life, redused visibility and it doesnt absord water. Not as good as a straight flurocarbon, but my choice for mono mainline until i find something better.

MiSh is spot on about Performance being rounder, this means that overall it is thinner than Matrix, which you can actoally see the flatness in when the line gets a few twists in it. Still both great lines. I was really considering Performance, but it wasnt oput when i bought the Matrix.

Awsome,
thanks for all of that. I'm not to keen on the bright yellow thoug, I'm fussy when it comes to colours lol. Not that the colour has anything to do with catching the fish. I'll be going down to tackle world today, I'll see if they have it. I'll have a look at a few other things also.
Cheers, Nugget.

I have been using matrix pro for ages and it hasnt failed yet. The main problem i found was when i tied ultra long leaders the knot picked up the 8lb stuff and made fluffys. Didnt have the same trouble with 10lb. I fixed this problem with shorter leaders. I still have two reels filled with 8lb yellow matrix pro but the other two reels have 6lb yellow performance braid, and another reel has two spools of 6lb green performance braid. I havent found a problem with it yet. The spools are way too full and it still doesnt spring off and it hasnt discoloured. Ties knots amazingly well. Its basically the same as bass hard- true braid not fused like fireline or sufix hydrofine, round like bass hard same texture etc.
These new braids are the way to go, the fused braid only have price on their side. For true performance Bass Hard and Performace Braid are going to serve you better in my opinion.

I'll go down today and see what their price is for it. But, by the looks of things I'll be buying it no matter what it costs me.
