I was wondering what size wire I am meant to use for a sounder? The manual seems to suggest some stupidly huge gauge. I have a bilge pump with a very long lead, could I just chop and change that?

Shane i'm assuming you are just talking about the power supply cable and not the tranducer cable?
If so yeah mate just about any half decent quality cable will do, try and keep it out of the water though as most cable insulation will seep in water over time and corrode the copper, and solder your cable joins if you are able to.
If you have to go and buy some just get 1.5mmsq. figure 8 cable.

shane, make sure you use tinned wire, it is copper that has a tin coating that adds better protection if water does get in.Also try and cover the ends of the wire with heat shrink as it helps with sealing the connection.
