Trebles

I recently changed a few of the trebles on my fast growing lure collection to the red chem sharpened trebs. These were the only chem sharpened trebs the particular tackle shop I was at had.
To me they don't look right and I've resisted putting them on many of my lures.
My last few outings produced about 4 or 5 strikes but only one hookup making me wish I had put the bloody things on the oargee I was fishing. The hookup I got was a good fish and he really smashed the lure, i think he would have hooked up on the bluntest of hooks.
Are many of you guy's out there using these red trebles?

Also the river2sea lure I have, came with a bigger treble on the front than the one on the back. Is this normal ?

As soon as i get a new lure the hooks get changed for red VMC's before it gets anywhere near the water. What do you mean when you say they don't look right? The fish i have caught so far don't seem to mind the colour if thats what you are talking about.
Don't know about the hooks on the river2sea lures sorry.

Might come from having a very colour coordinated missus.(everythin has to match) I just thought they looked out of place on some coloured lures.

Just opened up my copy of bream on lures and the first pic of a fish had red trebs hangin out its gob so I gues my q's are answered eh.

Russ that R2S with the big hook on the front is not a freak of nature. They all come like that.

In terms of trebles, I'm happy with the gama c/s.

Yep, I'll agree with craig, the Gamakatsu's are great (and you can get them on this site!!).

Also love the "Owner" brand trebles. A bloody sharp hook (sharper than gamas), and a shorter shank which I think sits better on some of the smaller bream lures.

I'm currently using the Youvella c/s hooks on my lures. I'm going out today, so i'll let you know how they go.
I've ordereda stack of Gold VMC c/s trebes from the US. They should be good, so i'll also let you all know how they go.
(Sorry Bear, I mixed the Brand names up last night. VMC, not Diaichi.)
I reckon that the red trebles look the goods mate!

One of the hook companies calls their red coloured hooks the "bleeding bait" series, seems they think the fish are attracted to the red hook because it looks like the bait/fish is injured and therefore an easy meal. I suppose the red trebles on a minnow type lure would give the same "bleeding" effect and might be an advantage over identical but plain hooks.
I agree though that at first site the red looks odd/bad on some lures ;-)

I've been testing the red VMC hook and have found them to be pretty good. Only complaint I have is that they are a little soft and should be changed on a regular basis.

One thing I have learnt from Ira is that you should be changing your trebles after 3-4 fish, depending on snags etc.

didn't do it at Perth and it cost me big time. I've been since and can tell straight away when they need changing. Just something else to learn.

I went over to Gamkatsu's after a few VMC's straightened on me & now I use gamas on all my lures & haven't had a problem at all.

What is there to say, gama gama gama size 10. I have tried the red chem sharp VMC`s, didn`t think they were sharp enough, the Daiichi`s are as sharp as gamas, but in my opinion lack some strength. Although the reports Ive had on the gold ones, is that they are super sharp, and Sewelly said every hit he got was a hook up, whch suprised him. But in saying that he has managed to straighten a couple since.

So for me It all comes back to Gamakatsu #10 ;) and there is no other that I consider.

The only time I go to another brand is for the Scorp 35`s, as size 12 gamas are a touch to long. Owners for those.

I agree with ravin, go the the gama's, the only reason I used daiichi's (size 12) cause they were small & light enough for teeny craws

I'd agree with Bear...Ira was saying that he changes his trebles regularly (especially in the comps!) it makes a huge difference (fishing smarter)...I had a look at the "Owner" brand and they look great! Small needle barb and there cheaper than gama's (about $7 -$8 pkt 10). Geoff P swears by them. I know Warren will be getting some in soon (according to Geoff);)
