Hi All, Was wondering if anyone had tried this stuff. Just arrived in mail today. Thought I might as well give it a shot for the price I paid.

Got four packets of 2X 9 foot tapered fluorocarbon leaders 8lb, .009" at tip, .21" at butt,
and a spool of 10lb leader fluorocarbon

First impressions........very very thin

Any suggestions on how to use the tapered 9 foot leader? maybe cut a few feet off? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong but I always thought that tapered leaders were only used for fly fishing as it helps the fly roll out properly hence the stiff butt section I don't think it will work overly well tied to fire line but then again I maybe wrong:confused: The other leader material sounds really good let us know how it works.

Please don't cut . It's a leader for the fly line. You should return it to the store to change to something else you need.To cut is to waste it.

Cheers Ballnuts and Penguin, Balls, I figured it was for fly fishing as well but thought there would be no harm in finding out the why and why not's on a spin combo. Thought maybe someone could give me better explanation than the one you and I come with...Its for fly fishing

Penguin, Can't really return it(Ebay) and not really worth i as I only paid 12.80 inc p+h, although.......seeing as though I have some fly leader, maybe I should buy a couple of good fly rods and reels

That's my first reaction too. The reason for tapered leaders is because most traditional flies do not have any weight on them and the fly line carries the fly. Because fly line is usually very thick and looks like those thin phone cables, you need a leader of some sort to attach the fly to so as not to spook fish. YOu can use a straight mono or fluorocarbon for that but if you're using 4 pound tippet (leader) straight, because the fly doesn't have any weight in it but the feather often create some drag in the air instead, the fly doesn't get presented properly and can fall in a heap close to the very visible fly line which then means the fish will get spooked and not take the fly. Tapered leaders are meant to counter that in that its meant to be invisible but yet be an extension of the fly line in that it when the forward cast is made, the whole rig, fly line and leader unfurls straight so when the fly lands in the water, the leader is straight therefore ensuring the fly is at the maximum possible distance from the end of the fly line. Of course, that's theory, and it doesn't compensate bad casting techniques (from experience). Poor casting will still make your fly fall in a heap, tapered leader or not.
For spinning, the weight is in the jighead so there really is no need for a tapered leader as there is no unfurling. It might even be disadvantageous to use the tapered leader as the thick section of the leader will travel slower in the air and through the guides.

yes, it is a fly leader. That's pretty good stuff you managed to get your hands on. From ebay..... that's real good mate.

Well, I'm sure there's fly fishing enthusiasts out there if you don't do it yourself that may wish to buy it off you.

Kami, When I'm fishing the Canning I often come across a fly enthusiast here and there, so will give it to one of the them.
Hpoefully get some god karma (fish) out of it.

Hi Bustlinbarry.

Your photo shows 7X leader, 9 feet, tapered, 2 lb breaking strain at the tip.

Like others have said, not much use for spinning gear. That light a leader is for really light tackle, tiny flies (14's to 22's). Being fluorocarbon, probably for nymphing.

See if any of the fly boys would want that for small stream and creek work for trout. Sell or exchange for something more suited to your needs.

Too true there man.

Taking an idea from my surfcasting days, you could probably use the leaders in reverse and throw heavier lures that you might not want to throw on light leader. Sort of like power casting shock leaders.
