ooops I should have added, when baitfishing I usually use 6lb maxima.

The 6lb Maxima doesn't make a bad leader either if you haven't got fluorocarbon.

Hey Guys.
If your not using fireline, can you give a reason why your using something else. I ask this, because we know why everyone loves fireline, but i want to know why some prefer other lines!

I normally use Fireline but Platypus sent me some 4 pound braid to try & I'm very happy with it. It is a lot more supple than Fireline & I think its pretty good stuff.

I use mainly Penn 10X, for mono line it has very little stretch in it and it very abrasion resistant. I use Rio's Flouroflex Plus for a leader on the end of the mono. I am just starting out with Fireline for my plastic/lure spinning.

If I use mono I generally tend to use Maxima Ultragreen, it really works well on threadlines of all sizes and seems to have a good balance of characteristics that suit my fishing.

Hello

I am confused! I thought braid and gelspun were the same thing?

Can anyone enlighten me

The terms braid, gelspun, gsp, etc are used rather loosely I've found.

Gel Spun Polyethylene is the base material from which many braided and fused lines are made.

Fireline is a fused GSP line, the fine fibres are laid out side by side, quite loosely and then some patented heating/squeezing process is used to fuse the fibres together into a usable fishing line.

Braid (to use a generic word - Harro's Bionic Braid would be a specific example) is made of the same base material, but the fibres are braided together by machine into a usable fishing line.
This is a more complex, time consuming operation and uses more of the raw material for a given length of line.

If you were to consider the example of a human head of hair;
a ponytail would be like the fused line, all the strands lay side by side and a rubber band or three used to keep them together, on the other hand a plait would be analogous to a braided line.

I used to have a problem in tackle shops with the braid/fusion thing.

"hello, i'd like some braid please"
"here have this fireline"
"no thanks, thats not braid"
"yeah tis"
etc etc

I had some dislikes with early fireline compared to braid, particularly in heavier sizes. Must admit to being converted with the newer fusion, for the lighter stuff.

I'd be interested to try some of the new "FINS PRT" braid. Its resin impregnated and in theory should have the better aspects of both braid and fusion. Unfortunatly only available down to 10lbs at the moment.

You can check out the website, http://www.finsfishing.com/

4 pound Fireline for softs/hards, i May choose to go Platapus 4 pound Braid for my next bream rod and reel though as i have heard it's good for Hards but softs, fireline still better outta the two.
Maybe 1 spool fireline 4 pound and 1 spool platapus 4 pound braid????

i said my bit anyways:)

I use an alvey sidecaster when I fish the surf.

Has anyone had any experience with fireline on a sidecaster?

Will it help as I am trying to go lighter looking for bream in the surf?
