Alternative to XDS or PRT Braid

I was looking to replace the Fireline on my reels with either XDS or Fins PRT Braid, but found out that XDS doesn't come in 4 or 6 pounds and FINS only have 4 pound line and the next one up from there is 10 pounds, so, if I were after 6 pound line but wanted something better than Fireline, what are my options?

XDS only comes in the one size... It's super strong, and super thin.

Can't go wrong IMO ;)

im pretty sure xds comes in 8,10,14,17,20lb etc.chung,the xds 8lb is very thin though im sure you wouldnt notie much difference.you could also try matrix pro,nice stuff.

Woops, yeah you're right Theo, it does come in other breaking strains. I've only seen the 8lb stuff.

Another option is Linesystems PE Braid - Bass Hard?, they have 6, 8 and 15lb plus heavier i think, one thing though Ive used 6lb in it and it was thinner than any 4lb Ive ever come across, Id now prefer 8lb min when fishing the extra light stuff xds or linesystems.. Nice orange colour as well.

interesting you thought that Richo, for its price it is curtainly what you pay for (thin,soft,easy to see) though sometimes being so thin (6lb) like your saying can be slight draw back in windy cases with tangles other than that it is truely AWSOME!! :p

thats why im ordering another 2 spools :D.

Ive used the 6lb a while back and could cast further than anything else Ive used, but also had a little more trouble in the wind as James mentioned, I had grey and they have since brought out the spoofy orange.....

Id really like to try the 8lb and see how that fares. Fishing the flats Id run the 6lb every time though. Casts a mile :).

Dunno about using PE braid on spin reels. Just cos it's soft and with the wind, it's more than likely to get into a mess as it doesn't lay on the spool as well as the harder fireline.

I've had trouble in the past with braided lines of any sort on spin gear, so now I've just got it spooled on my baitcaster.

I'd stick with the 8lb XDS. it's very thin, just about as thin as 4lb normal fireline and worth the price. It's high quality stuff.

That's the way I feel about the use of either.

yep i have linesystems on all of my rods (6lb) and i have not had any bad tangles with it a few loops but thats more the reel than the line.

Fireline is so CRAP at the moment. Im not really happy with any fireline anymore. If it doesnt knot up it snaps from weak spots and goes all lumpy. I need a new line HEEEEEEEEEEELP!

Gees Nath,

Sounds like you've really run in to trouble with a bad batch of Fireline. I"m glad I've never had those problems yet (touch wood).

I'd still stick with Fireline mate. Try a different type like the XDS if you haven't already done so.

Sufix makes thier matrix pro in 8lb and is available in hi vis yellow. Its similar in texture to PRT. I have used it for ages and found it really nice to cast with. Its a round profile braid not flat like fireline and doesnt break leader knots. Ive used the 10lb for ages and its the same diameter as 4lb fireline but breaks more than 10lb.

It sells for about 30 bucks a 130m spool.

what about Sure Catch Live Fibre TX Braid 4lb. I have been using it now for over 6 months and have found it to be great. It’s not that expensive, casts well and hasnt lost it's colour.

Not sure if they make it in 6lb; but I've got a spool of 12lb Spiderwire fusion on my heavier spinning rod for over a year and have been very impressed !! - no fraying, nice and round, and casts well !
I'll definitely be using it more often from now on !

I'm im Melb too and I'm chasing that up now.

From memory I recall seeing it in JM Turnvilles in the city a few months back, but I could be wrong. Can't get back there to confirm.

Also looking for on-line store availability.

Mim and I use the Linesystem braid and it is truly fantastic stuff. The 6lb is very thin, more so than 4lb fireline, as Richo said. As an all round setup I would recommend the 8lb linesystem braid as it is a tad smaller in diameter than 4lb fireline and you'll still get fantastic performance as it casts superbly. Chris 'Slick' Wright was suitably impressed with Mims casting during the Clyde ABT round as she was getting a little more distance than his Rapala 'squidgy' braid.
