guys when i spooled up my older rod (read cant remember when) i used it for yrs after yrs and i have now re-spooled it with Penn 10X only because i was told to try it.
Now how do you know if your old line is all used up?
And is penn 10X good?
What is the difference with the fireline and gel spun line, and braid next to mono.
My new 2-4Kg rod has 10X 3kg but i think maybe i should try fireline altho the fishing shops have said its a waste unless deep fishing (for the stretch) and surf fishing(cuts through wave / wind)
now both shops have the fireline fully stocked. one being JV Marine

Penn 10X is probably the most abrasion resistant line on the market, I use it for most of my fishing
As for your old line, if it is brittle, discoloured or just ragged looking, chuck it.
I am only new to Fireline so I can't realy comment

Mate, do a search of these forums for 'Fireline', the information that comes up should keep you going for a while:D
Just briefly, you can get an amazing lifespan out of one spool of Fireline - Backfill the spool with mono to only use half of it, when one end wears a bit turn it over end-to-end etc.
As to line being old.... when you start getting bust offs for no apparent reason, or can physically break the line easily yourself, it is safe to say it's dead (a lot of this has to do with mono breaking down because of U.V. DohDohDohDoh).
Fireline, on the other hand, doesn't seem to noticably weaken over time (I've still got a spool that's at least 10 years old).
Forget what the tacklo tells you, just get some Fireline and decide for yourself - you'll be very happy you did;)

well my mono, altho i cant remember what brand or weight it was, was still working fine and very old, felt a bit "crunchy" but hey all its life in salt water fishing and i had never once washed it... same for the reel :)
i'll leave the penn 10X on the old beast,
but get some fireline for the new rod / reel now and use the penn 10X for the mono backing.....
what do you use for the leader and why do you need a leader with fireline yet not mono?
Here are some of the main reaons for using fireline.
It has very minimal stretch, incredible strength and an extremely thin diameter.
4lb fireline is the same diameter as 1lb mono. This gives awesome casting ability and minimal resistance in the water. The lack of stretch means you literally feel everything that touches your line. Strength sort of speaks for itself.
The need fora mono leader is more of a shock absorber. The lack of stretch in fireline can hinder your fishing as it can cause you to pull hooks. The shock leader helps with that. Also, the leader is needed in rough terrain. Fireline isn't all that good around sharp objects, whereas mono is. Hence the use of leaders. Visibility is also another reason. Mono is much harder to see.
Hope this helps mate.

Sandworm, the Bear had a post going about the sometimes dubious quality of advice received from tackle shops. I bet if you asked those same stores, now they actually stocked fireline, you'd get a different answer.
Try it, it really does make a difference.
I still use Penn 10X on my rocks rod, it does a good job for that purpose. Dont know that I like the colour of it for luring bream but.
Yeah got to agree with Craig on that!
Why would Berkly make 4 and 6 pound fireline for deep sea fishing!!!:D
The shop probably makes more profit from the other lines so they reccomend that instead. I would say that at least 80% of the guys on here use fireline.
I might evern start a poll for it!

they didn't say dont buy it, or is wasn't good he said it was great but not worth it for the fishing i am doing.
eg not deep water (no worry about strech) and not surf so the thin line cutting through the waves is not a problem for me....
hence he said for the money get the penn 10X (less than half the price)
That said i am going to go buy a spool for my 2-4Kg spinning rod. Leave 10x on the older heaver rod, and maybe even look at some for the Surf rod because it has line like cable! on it at the moment!!!
