A mate and I met on the foreshore of Mannering Park Lake Macquarie. We suited up and started paddling towards the fast moving water coming from the hot water outlet for a quick troll. We both had some hits but no luck (from memory).
We proceeded towards the pipes towads Wyee Creek, which go under the road and lead into an estuary fishing nirvana. Lake Macquarie was experiencing an extremely big tide so head room in the pipes was limited and I have the lump to prove it
Once in the creek proper we where both started trolling. We where both keen to get to Dead Woods so after a brief and unsuccessful troll we pulled up and started paddling. We arrived at Dead Woods just as the wind started picking up. We where not impressed as flicking lures in amongst snags is not something you want to be doing in strong wind.
We both found a spot tied off to a tree and started flicking. From memory we were both using SX40s to start with. It wasn’t long before My mate got himself a nice Bream then shortly thereafter he had another. Getting frustrated with the lack of action I switched over to using a Halco Scorpion and was immediately rewarded with a nice Bream. It was great fun flicking in Dead Woods and we ended up leaving with 5 or 6 legal Bream. I also brought a very large Long Tom to the yak before he got off.
On the paddle back down stream I managed to catch a tea tree with my new SX48. I wasn’t leaving without it so then began a rather comical attempt to retrieve it. I ended up getting it back evenly but not before nearly ending up in the drink again I was very thankfully my mate did not have his camera with him.
Back on the creek again and this time we decided to explore a shallow creek we had not tried before. The creeks was only 2 foot deep at most but we have had enough shallow water experiences to know that there is good fishing to be had in the shallows. As soon as I entered the creek my first cast landed a nice Bream. We parked the yaks and started flicking. We ended up leaving the flats couple of nice Bream.
Back on the yaks again and just before heading back into the pipes I though I would have a quick flick. I was immediately hit by a large Long Tom, which proceeded to jump and tail dance on the water. What a great fight. This fish however managed to free himself before I was able to land it.
Back out onto the lake proper and my mate makes the call that there was another Long Tom feeding on the surface over there. A couple of cast later he has landed a nice Long Tom. It put up a great fight. Gatesy managed another one shortly after that.
It was a great days fishing. Ficking lure is a very enjoyable way to fish.
