hi mike
it all depends and varies on the conditions at the time so i cannot say what softplastic works best but anyway i have had most of my success on squidgie fish in size 2 in the silver fox and gary glitter colours and also i have caught a numver of flathead on chartruse atomic shads.hope this helps

There is actually no point in using 2 inch lures unless you are after flatties as a bycatch when breamin'. You cover far more water with 3" or 4" plastics on 1/4 oz jigheads, and even the tiniest flathead and flounder will take lures that big. Plus you can cast further. Definately go bigger plastics for flatties.
As for specifics - flatties don't care. I like to use tubes because it takes hours for blowies to destroy them, but everything and every colour will work nearly 100% of the time. And yes I've tested it. Flathead really are stupid.
Chris
100% agree with Chris on this point, 2" Softies are only going to catch you small to medium Flatties. If you are after decent Flathead any of the 3" upward sized Shads are probably the best. I personally like to use 3" Sliders and then upgrade to 4" Shads if the Sliders are slow.

Absolutely, the bigger and bolder the better. And you can still get a "by-catch" bream on bigger plastics. That one in my photo is hanging onto a 3" crawdad/brown fat grub during what was meant to be a flattie session.

Hi all
I find anything small or large in pink to be the go....the bigguns like pink but then again maybe I've caught more on pink cos' I like it  but large shads will get large flatties for sure. They are such big gutses
Campbell's have a generic range of shrimp plastics that are about 3 inches long. I've been using them for years and they do very well. Fluro orange is the best colour so far.

i agreee with daniel the squidgy range of shads , wrigglers and fish all catch flathead the atomic range also all catch fish even the small paddle tail varieties .
ive caught a lot of flathead at brooklyn on pumpkinseed sliders the flathehead daniel mention was a red and white with silver glitter in the tail. but the blue and silver ones still work the atomic shads work pretty well so do the renosky shads.
other brands which catch flatties effectivly include holy mackeral , juro , kokoda , ecogear etc but if your looking for decent flatties try between 2 and 6 inch plastics but rig them with enough weight to reach the bottom as this is where most of the flathead take the lures .
flathead will rarely refuse a nicely presented plastic .you might need to add a few twitches to wake them up a bit and to get them into feeding mode. there are still other plastics like prawn shaped ones like the kokoda prawn and the D.O.A prawn which are similar but the doa has a better action .
if you big ones use big plastics ,small one use smaller plastics even though a big flattie can still be caught on little sliders and atomics. if you use big ones expect less fish but they will most likely be big ones if you use small ones expect a few more fish but of a smaller variety . so i would tend to rather use a medium size as most fish will still have a go at it anyway so stick to 2-4 inches will probably be your best bet.

I wouldn't go for the squidgies cause they cost so much! Especially on flathead which would take anything even the cheapo noname brand softies will work. Also if your' fishing sand flats at night where theres a light (ie, claremont jetty) i found that the darker colours work best. just drag a black grub or anything and any in range will go for it.

A few mates of mine on the gold coast exclusively use 6 inch renosky shads when targeting flatty still get the little ones but consistantly get alot of fish over 60cm.

I have found bigger is better for sure when targetting flatties. I was getting a lot of small ones & only the odd big fella while I was using small sliders & atomic paddles but when I switched to larger softies like 70mm squidgies I was consistently getting better fish & I finished using Kakoda livin bam bams in 150mm length & got a bunch of bigger fish 70cm plus.
I would also have to say 4" are best. Ive caught plenty on 2" but mainly from 28-40cm. For the biggies I'll use 4" atomics.
Cheers
