Hi....Could someones give me some thoughts on a good quality reel/rod combo for $100 or under? Someone recommended me to get Abu Garcia TP4000 reel / Shimano Spectrum 6.6" rod, while others recommended Shimano FX4000 reel / Silstar Powertip 6.6" rod. I am confused now...

gday
this setup is about 160 but itr is very good, a daiwa samurai 7 bb, and a daiwa procastor s 2- 6lb bot are around the reel is 90 and the rod is 80 something.
it is worth spending the extra dollars for a half decent setup.

hi dude I bought a shakespeare contender rod (2-4kg) 6'6 for $50 and a diawa crossfire for $50 also and ita makes a great combo. The crossfire is a cut down laguna (i think) with only 4 ball bearings. The samurai reel is only twenty bucks more and would be even better value but save some money for an order of breammaster (the most important bit) :)
Hope that helps

The Hardbodyz series runs:
- Team Z
- Capricorn
- Laguna
- Kastor
- Caprice

The Samurai series have the same body style, but are composite, not metal bodied. It runs:
- 7i
- 3i

Then comes the Crossfire series, it runs:
- i (front drag)
- no suffix (rear drag)
- last number is a five (has auto cast trigger)

Then the Sweepfire series is last in that shape.

Thanks for the replies guys.
So Grant, what size of the daiwa crossfire you got for $50. Size 2000? Would that be a good size for river fishing or I should go with size 4000? The shakespeare contender rod 6'6 would be 2 pieces wouldn't it?

A 2000 size is going to a good match for a light spinning outfit that will suit estuary, freshwater and light saltwater situations.
Going bigger will unbalance the outfit. A 4000 size is more suited to fishing with 4 to 8 kg lines on a rather heavier rod.

Spool your 2000 sized reel with 1 to 4 kg line, most here prefer Berkley Fireline in the 4 pound breaking strain (actually tests closer to 10 lb).

If you are only fishing for bream, trout, mullet, trevally, etc then even a 1000 size reel will be adequate.

Another reel worth looking at is the Okuma range.

I have an FA30 which was only $50. Well worth the effort.
