Has anyone tried fishin SP on the surface instead of the standard sub-surface thing?
I read an article in a mag where Bushy did this with some success although it did take refining. Twin-tails apparently work the best and only certain brands.

Not so far, but that is one technique I will be trying at Lakers Cutting when I fish there for Bream. It is shallow (600mm tops) and weedy as anything.

Hi Guys

I remeber seeing busy and starlo doing a segment on a rex hnt show where they where casting 2" plastics on mustad hooks (Kmart specials) and using a rapid retrieve there by keeping it on the surface.

Maybe use an old stocking and put in some bean from the bean bag this is used on bobby flies (Uk fly fishos). use some close foam on the head or body so the Sp floats to the surface.

I think the easiest thing is to use a high speed retrieve no jig head and have only a tiny amount of hook showing through, double tails are the go.

Cheers

What you need is a heavily salt impregnated single-tailed grub (the ones where if you rub them, they start to break up and salt appears). Rig that on an offset hook with the tail hanging down and you can "buzz-grub" over the shallows. The salt does make the grub sink slowly, so you need to work the grub relatively fast. You kinda need the heavy salt to facilitate casting.

Never tried it for bream but it works on flatties. Very visual way of fishing too.

Have not tried twin tails a la Bushy( article was good though) but have had good success with plastics-single tails, fished behind the small floating popper heads that they sell for some of the fancy american bass rigs using big soft plastics.
Have also used fly popper heads available from Compleat Angler or Alpine Angler. Have fun

hi All

I have yet to use a gurgler (bass style) on bream in the middle of summer. Poppers need fish who arent timid and are ready for the bite (poopomg action can be too much for them).

Ive been using 3inch Stickbaits for Bream and have had good results.

I've had the most luck with 3" stickbaits, and 2-3" fat grubs (similar to the Atomic Bass Grubs) fished unweighted (they're heavy enough to cast O.K.)

I still fish them ultra slow - short hops across the surface with long pauses.

The Bream go nuts, sometimes hitting them up to 10 times on the one retrieve - the trick for hookup is to let them have it for a while before striking.

Gday

Ive tried the normal atomic 2" twin tails and have caught only a small one right on the surface.

I've gotta say, of all the bloke I know who regularly surface fish for Bream, most use single tails or Sluggo / Berkley Bass Minnow type lures - they definitely have a better hook up rate.

I think it's got something to do with the 'target area' with double tails - there's just to much for a fish to pick off the surface and not hook up...

Have you tried the lunkercity 21/2 fin-S fish.
Brought a pack the other day and caught a couple of good ones, seem to be stronger than the Bass Minnows.

I have been surface fishing with softies for a couple of years and have had good results "butt" rigging a small treble to the softie. Just get a large needle and tie your leader to it and insert it down the middle of the grub and pull the leader through, then tie the treble on and pull the treble back to the body. You may have to play around with the treble, depending on what grub you use. On some grubs you will have to insert one of the points in to the grubs body just before the tail and have the other two points hanging down so the tail can still work. Its a very effective method of fishing racks with only a few centimetres of water over them.
