Have never weighed a live bream before and justed wanted to know the best technique and what to use. Have had a quick look at a local tackle store and had some small 4-5kg hanging style weighers, is that what to get? Also do you just hook the fish by the lip and weigh or make a cradle of somesort and weigh it in that?

definately dont hang them by the lip. digital scales will give you a more accurate measurement but are more expensive.

a cradle would be best for the fish....maybe a material like the environets are made from. just remember to tare your scales after the cradle is hooked on....you dont want your fish to be heavier than it really is do you?? :D :D

Certainly not so I gather the aluminium can trick of packing with scrap metal is not on ;)

Probly wouldnt be able to afford digital scales but might go with cheap set of kitchen scales that you can weigh stuff on. Or try making a tarp material cradle for a hanging weigher. Cheers pete

just make sure the cradle is made out of a smooth material....something like canvas might be too rough.

i agree digital scales are expensive, around the $100 mark, but are well worth the investment for accurate fish weighing.

make yourself a traditional chinese scale. it is basically a stick with the fulcrum (sp?) point tied to a piece of string which you hold up, and to balance the stick horizontally, you have on one side a pan/cradle and on the other side a weight suspended on a piece of string that can me moved along the stick. at each weighted increment (say 100gm) you mark where the weight is along the stick in order for it to be balanced.

better to look at the picture to understand what i am on about. but they are easy to make and are quite accurate and easily transportable.

G'day Grant,
Mate I reckon the best way to weigh a bream would be with a set of digital scales (i have Berkley ones I think they were $40) which you hook on to your net. Weigh the net, add the fish and subtract the weight of the net from the recording you get. Simple, safe for the fish and accurate.
Cheers Geoff
I will head down your way one day
This is only half of the fish we caught that day, about to be released of course

thats a good idea Geoff. Might ahve to rig up one of your 'environets' :)
Ever down this way catch up and go fishing for sure. Thats a nice selection of fish in the net might have to invest in a airator as well

I've got the same scales a Geoff (takes a bit of getting used to the 'pounds' part) and my Environet weighs 1.6 lbs wet - it's easy to work out the fish weight:)
