Walked around some local sandflats on low tide and come across small gangs of whiting, usually 5-6 fish at 35-40cm. I rigged up the smallest jighead I had which was 1/32 size 4 and using ecogear minnow in the red, pink and natural colours and also msucdine slider. Watching the 5 or so whiting chasing after the softy was awesome but I could not hook up:( Approx dozen hits and 6 I even saw the whiting hit and run. Started with full size plastics but started cutting them down as much as possible but no luck.

Anyone who can give me more tips would be greatly appreciated.
On a sidenote I tried the gold52 scorp and the whiting would chase it but not attack, changed to sneaky gold and they seemed scared of it :)

Heya AG,
I have "fluked" a few nice whiting in the past while fishing for other fish BUT..........
I (and a mate who's fish is featured in the shots below) always catch them on the one and only Teeny Wee Crawdads(any colour)!!!
I think its the right size ,right action and you can rig them with no.12 chem trebles which seem to work even if the fish are just pecking the lure.
btw, most of our fish will always come form "dirty" water as well.
oh don't they go like smoke too!!:D :D

There were a few caught in Walpole Grant, and on the 52 as well.... if they are following it, try heaps of twitches or something... mght prevoke a hit.

cheers

I've had the most 'consistant' (if you can call it that) luck on Whiting with cut down (by 3 or 4 ribs) Muscadine and Pumkinseed 1.5" Sliders, with the Muscadine slightly out in front.
Remember, I always use clear Garlic Spike-It, did you try the Spike-It Grant?

Thats a nice whiting Kris. I tried everything that morning. Crystal clear water but it was windy so it made it hard to see.
Richo the scorp52 caught me a whiting from the same area a couple of days before hand but they wouldnt strike it that morning just follow. DaveW havnt tried using any scents yet. Bit short on funds atm so has anyone got reports of using the el cheapo essence?

Grant,
My friend soaks them (softies) in fish oil overnight when going for them. He says they work like a dream. Inspired by that idea I have put fish oil in the zip-lock bags with the softies and I also added salt. When I checked them in the morning the sliders soaked up the best and there wasn't any visible oil and the atomics only soaked op a little. The other brands were inbetween the sliders and atomics.

Hey guys

I've been fishing for whiting some times but never used lures, i didn't know that lures would work because usually whiting are a timid fish, i use bait when i go for whiting, strips of squid on a chemicly sharpened long shank hook always worked for me. could you recomend any hard body lures for whiting and bream please?

Thanx a bunch

Grant,

I am yet to get one one a lure. I'm the only one in the family who likes breamin so, so far I have only gone once (last week). I did enjoy it though because I had bream bites. I was amazed that they gave it one bit hit then sucked it like a prawn.

I hope to get one next week as I am going with a friend to the Elbow on the Collie breamin'.

ATM its too hard to convince them (my folks) to go breamin as they hooked on the tailor at the mouth.:( :( :(

I think the key with whiting is dirty water = aggressive hits.
Most of my fish have fallen to pumkinseeds and my home bled manns auger tail.
