Minn Kota servicing

So what have all you Minn Kota guys learnt about your motors?
IE what preventative measures can you take to keep it in top working order etc?

I am always wondering what else I should be doing with my riptide, apart from the usual loving washdown....
What spares does everyone keep?
are spare props a must? etc etc....

G'day Bassifier,
I have the quick release mounting on my boat,and allthough I religously wash my motor ,I was not paying enough cleaning attention to the mount.Over winter,it has ceased up and needs replacing,it's still useable but looks a lot weaker due to rust.
There is a service centre at Silverwater ,I got the number from Otto's, but have lost it:rolleyes: .
Oh yeh,I have a spare prop which the guy at Silverwater gave me for nicks:D
I have heard a spray of wd-40 under the foot control pad can help prevent corrosion ,it may pay to check with an expert though.

Apart from a really good wash and a liberal dowsing with Inox (almost soak the foot pedal in it:rolleyes: ) I've done absolutely no maintenence to mine ever - I need a new prop (bloody sandstone boulders in the Nepean:( ) but otherwise everythings fine.

Not bad considering I've had it for 4 years+ and it's a freshwater model that spends half it's life in salt.

I like it much better than WD40 or similar - it doesn't seem to dry out and leave a 'bare' surface like some of the others.

Have you ever tried any of the products that are made from (is it lanolin?) wool products?

Nah I haven't Kev but I've heard some really good things about them (and I suppose you'd be supporting an Australian industry??) Lanolin is the stuff, I think it's marketed under 'Lanotec' or similar - I'll stick with the Inox for now, it's a case of if it 'aint broke don't fix it:D

sand is the enemy of the foot control. I to use a lanolin spray but get concerened that the sand will stick in it in the inside where I cant see it and wear through a connection. It can get a bit tacky. However i know that water and salt aint sticking to it. Also wipe over shaft etc with armoural every so often to bring back its sheen.
