Painting Jigheads Yes/No

Is it worthwhile painting jigheads or is it only certain situations that warrant it(ie. clear water)?

Personally ive never done it but there is no harm in trying :)

iam not sure about that but a couple of my mates sat it puts the fish off,but i think it would only matter if the water was crystal clear.

ive found that an orange painted jighead combined with a orange tailed paddletail is a killer in cloudy water.

i managed a few bream on the orange jighead, then swapped for an hour or so to a plain head and didnt manage a fish. swapping back and bingo!! another 3 fish landed. not exactly scientific i know but useful info none the less.

i have heard that it puts the fish of because the first jigs i bought were fluro pink and yellow and used them all day untill i borrowed my mates lead colour ones and straight away bang a tarpon. i think the fished were freaked out by the fluro but i reckon the lead is perfect in any water.

i caught two bream tonight 28cm & 34cm on painted nappy brown on pumpkinshrimp and muscidine sliders, could have been a fluke but will try more

When they're a bit fussy, and I'm cutting down the Sliders a bit, I'd prefer as natural or unobtrusive a jig head as possible to bring the 'profile' down - and the lead colour is probably as good as any (after they've tarnished)

Otherwise mix and match the colours to experiment a bit - nail polish makes a good jighead paint:D

Theres definently no harm in doing it, and i've found that those cheap painted hed/jigheds do quite well when spinning.

grant i personally think the extra colour will put the fish off,it is the soft plastic you put the jig that is suppose to attract the fish.

Personally i think that painting jig heads is a waste of time, i rather change the action of my tail depending on the situation.

I will change to a single tail or double tail in darker water and in crystal clear water i rather use a natural coloured paddle tail.

Do we need jig heads at all then? Sounds like coloured jig heads are NOT preferred but at the same time bare jig heads need to be kept small when fish are fussy. Without the fishing experience I would think that a coloured jig with a small black dot would present better as lure but it sounds like a plain lead ball (which you would think is less natural) is more successful. Wonder if it grubs would work better if you just used the special hook that are used to make jig heads but without the "head". Maybe push a small nail in the grub for extra weight. Any thoughts on this??

If its better to reduce the profile of the jig head in the water, then wouldnt it be best to paint it the same colour as the plastic? (ie brown plastic/brown jig head?)

And what about those new Nitro jig heads? any tried em out yet?

I'm for painting jigheads and even glue eyes on as well. I catch fish on brown and purple favouring the Avon Mirror Shine Nail Enamel. good stuff

I like the way Matt Fraser has painted some of his jig heads black and maroon. Nothing too scary.

I don't see why it wouldn't help. We use some very bright colours on HB's, why not plastics. I'm still getting the hang of plastics, but used the orange Saltwater Assassins at Collie. Still got a few hits and I'll be working with them a bit more.

I have broken the eyes of a couple of old lures with holographic eyes and stuck them on my jigheads, they work well.

I've been trialing lead dumbbells with lead thread combo and am almost ready to give standard balls away. Can't seem to give up bullet heads though.

In his bream book Steve Starling says he painted jig heads with nail polish, he makes a joke about the girls at the chemist thinking he was a drag queen.
Doubt he'd do it if it scared bream away.

I use painted & unpainted heads myself & I use nail polish in brown & a purple similar to muscadine slider colour. I use "Satin" brand cause its cheap & last a while. The only problem is when you find the girls from the chemist shop drink at your local :p :p

I personally think it all comes to personal favourite. I like the colour match to the plastic colour which attract to me...then I believe it will attract to fish :D

Honestly it all comes to your own faith.

If you think that work....it will work! No matter what colour of jighead is.

I think retrieve technique and shape of the soft plastic profile is more important. O..well..it is only my personal opinion.
