Hey fellas, jus bought some flame green 6lb fireline and have finished spooling up (ohh so silky!).
I have misjudged how much line i hav and am stuck with no line left and about 3mm still to go to fill the spool. Is this gap too much? I heard it helps stop birdnests? (not spooling to the very edge). Can some one fill me in?

It might be just as easy to take it off again and use some mono as backing. Wind on mono till approx 3mm deep then join the line with a suitable knot (uni knot or other suitable knot) and then rewind fireline back on.

3mm below the lip of the reel will add considerable drag and reduce casting distances so it is probably well worth doing.

Yeah 3mm is too much, fill it up until the line is almost in line with the lip.

If your reel has a spare spool you could do this:
(1) wind fireline onto your secondary spool
(2) then join and wind on some mono until it reaches your desired level.
(3) now Reverse the line by winding it onto your primary spool

If you don't have a spare spool simply take off and disconnect the mono (it should now be perfectly cut to length), then take off the fireline and put the mono on first.

and make sure you put a lot of tension on the fireline when you are spooling it so it packs tightly to the spool.
