I couldn't believe it when I came across this story about a snapper kill & grill comp' in Victoria. The numbers are absurd!
check out the link!
Maybe a few Victorians could enlighten us with other details?

thats horrible we blame netters for the fish stocks slowly plumeting. maby we should be looking at our selves :( , thats like probly 1/50 of the snapper population in austraila(well it feels that way anyway):(

i reckon that having all those fish killed in one day has gotta do something significant to the population, pretty irresponsible on behalf of the club.
I hope this doesn't offend our Victorian Breammaster members :D

agh god that was horrible, i think it was about 6 months ago about the same time as the shimano comp.
It was a bloody discrase that they ran the comp in that mannor.
1850 anglers competed.....out there all day, would of killed about 2-3 pinkies/snapper each its a bloody discrase, and no wonder the fishing started to drop off a bit after that.
the shimano comp.....was the same story a kill and grill comp with many boats. my mate won it tho!
cheers greg

Yeah thats only normal for that site.
I had a really bad falling out with that site after I tryed to get them to start c&r some of there catch.
That sites a discrase and isnt doing one thing to help our fish stocks. Its nothing but meat carving mentality.
I havnt used that site in almost a year now and I advise everyone to stear clear of it. If that picture doesnt scare you just check out the rest of the photo gallery.
cheers, Nathan

im not offended,im shocked and appalled:eek: not only is it a disgrace that they organise it in that format but that, the number of anglers who competed was so huge, dont these ppl think about the future???????its almost funny that so many of the ppl holding fish were little kids and by the time they have kids there will be so few fish left they will probably be on the endangered species list:(

well just doing another google yielded a result. It appears that the club pretty well focuses on Snapper. The prizes don't even justify the slaughter

thats disgusting. That really shocks me to see that. You think organisers of these comps would no better. You would also think that the fisheries department of that state would do something about comps like that. It's really not teaching the kids anything about fish for the future. If every single fishing comp caught and kept there fish, in less than a few years we would have no more fish:mad: It makes me mad to c that:mad:

Yeah I'm with ya's...
I regularly visit that site to check out the galleries and reports. NOT happy with that site sometimes. So much for ''fishvictoria-all about fish and fishing for anglers in Victoria, Australia''.
Don't worry I have seen all of those pics in the gallery! Some of the ones are disgusting. 40cm+ bream with their neck sliced/gutted and lying in the kitchen sink!
Not only that...Some of the mods on that site are so unreliable! Most mods on that site regularly post up 'pro fishing reports'. Peter Jolly hasn't done one in ages! I even see other reports on other locations that talk about what has been hapening in PPB and Corio bay! Veeery...lazy IMO.

Now Fishvictoria ran the story about the comp' by Snapper Point Angling Club pointing out that there is a greater need to promote Catch & Release. They were not condoning the comp' as being appropiate or responsible. The Fishvictoria site does appear to have good intentions. They talk of doing further promotion of Catch and Release (Fish for the Future) and we must also recognise that an individual or group is quite within their rights to submit photos of their bag limit catch for the gallery.

Make sure you read this bit from the link
"With this in mind, and as a matter of principle, fishvictoria.com has decided that it will no longer promote saltwater scale or fin fish competitions that do not include a strong catch and release incentive. How this might work is up to the organisers and it will be interesting to see how many, if any, are prepared to take up the challenge. It will be easy to say that this is impossible, but the best results are rarely those that are the easiest to attain."

Look i dont want to start an argument or anything, but i really cant see anything wrong with that photo. Or for the matter of fact 2000 anglers getting together to fish. You have to remember that fishing is the largest participation activity in the world, and especially australia.
So those numbers of fish are caught every day of the week by people who take them home for a feed.
The problem here is that a photo was taken of probably less than .1 of .1% of the aussies who fish and took home fish on that particular day. And it therefore looks like a hell of a lot of fish.
You have to remember that three quarters of the planet is ocean, we are never going to run out of fish or even come close to it. Our problem is we will lose accessibility to fish for them. But even then that will be because of enviromental factors not from over fishing. Classic example is the Thames river (runs through London) for 30 years it was classed as a dead river. They cleaned it up and now its just crap but you can catch fish from it. Why you would has got me buggered though.
Any way enough of me ranting, and i still think it sucks because I enjoy catch and release fishing, but as my wife just pointed out "you bring herring home for me". So like the rest of the population my argument suits my particular needs at that time.

Hi Leon
good to see you online. You made quite a valid point regarding the numbers drawn against the total number of fishers in Australia, unfortunately it is out of context. Imagine this scenario:
As C & R sportfishers we wish to preserve the resource and being grouped into the class of recreational fishers by Fisheries across the country we have given in to size, number and season restrictions to reduce our impact on the resource. Then we have one comp' that had 1855 fishers weighing 2462 dead fish from one small area within Port Philip Bay in a minimal number of fishing hours. This event is watched by the bureacrats and used by them as fuel to put more restrictions in place all because they can present the data in a way that paints a grim picture of current management.
I really don't like the sound of it

on the other hand those bureacrats manipulate and present the data if they want to anyway.. we shouldn't be practicing catch and release for their sake, but for ourselves. yes be selfish, but in the sense that you'll leave some for tomorrow so you can head out there and get more fun for yourself. :)
what i'd like to agree is that yes, this is done everyday of the week (the number of fish kept) over a large area by rec fishermen, most of whom go out there for a feed, but ithink what is disappointing with this is that it is actually endorsed and condoned by a fishing club, who should be more responsible. they should encourage catch and release, but if people wanted to keep it, so be it. instead of catch kill and weigh (unless im wrong about that? sorry i got that impression)
just my view on the topic. we shouldn't look down or discriminate against those people though. most of them were just out there for a feed too.but and however im sure we would all have been happier if they caught enough just for a few good meals, instead of trying to fill the freezer.
JHO :) :)
