View Full Version : Mono Straight Through
I have been a Fireline/Fluerocarbon Leader man for the entirety of my Bream Spinning days so far but with the Clyde Comp this weekend I have decided to spool up my other setup with 4lb Vanish straight through to the lure.
All of the guys I spin with are also Fireline/leader folks and to tell you the truth I cant think of anybody who runs Mono straight through anymore. Does anybody out there run mono straight through?
Cheers

Matt you don't mention why your going to do it.
Is it to save tying leaders? I can't think of any other reason.
Howdy Jim, to some extent yes. One of the things I really hate is retying shortened Leaders out on the water, especially during a comp!
Another reason is I might use some extremely light plastics that can be difficult to deliver accurately so it also an attempt to streamline the whole rig, no knots! Whether this is faulty theorising or not will come out in the glue so to speak :D
My primary rod for the comp will still be running 6lb Fireline and leader though.
Cheers

Thats interesting Matt and I'd like to hear next week how it went for you.
I like fireline about the only two thing I dont like is tying leaders and the sound of the leader join knot when it goes through the rod eyes.

In one of the Breamin vids Steve Starling fished 2lb mono straight through. In the shut down river that was near where he lived? Only time I've really seen very light mono used instead of the normal combo.

Mike
Is it the knot connecting the lure/hook to the mono coming undone? Has to be his knot tying you would think, as it would be more of a chance of the uni knot joining the leader to the fireline that would come undone in hook up if he was using the standard set up.
I would have to agree with Beefaman, having a knot come undone at the jig/hook/eyelet sounds more along the line of a bad knot? I have had my leader know come unstuck whilst using vanish but never at the jig?

Bushy writes about using 1 or 2 kg mono (Vanish I think) in a magazine article titled "Going soft in the south" where he uses it as main line straight to the jig as a further level of finesse in trying to catch Bream in the Tambo River in East Gippsland. Of course it works a treat and he fills his livewell with prime specimens.
Steve Starling also mentions "the scringy line of doom" as being his and Bushy's term for 2 lb Vanish in the ABT 2003 Tour Guide booklet, page 15, "Tackle bags of the pros". He says it is "ultra-finesse" and won him the Shoalhaven round in 2001.
Hey Matt
I used to fish with 6lb mono all the way to the jig. I was fishing in really rough country aswell. Although i lost a few fish here and there, the lack of knot (leader) was really good, as i hate having to tie them all the time. The only down fall is the stretch in the line and the loss of sensitivity. You do get less hookups, butnyou also pull less hooks out of the fish due to the extra strectch. Its all up topersonal preference!

dont forget that fluorocarbon has less stretch than mono.
using fluoro straight through works when the fish are shutdown and very timid. using it also depends on where your fishing. in tight snaggy country id be inclined to use a lighter longer leader rather than straight fluoro.

Hey Matt,
I've started to fish mono straight through a bit lately (Penn Powerline or ANDE), mainly because it's fun landing a good fish on light line, but also if i'm fishing plastics and the bream are spooked easily.. clear 1.7kg or 2.7kg mono is a lot easier to fish with, obviously the fish won't get so freaked out.
Although I have been finding out lately the downside of fishing that light..been smoked a few times while using it but other than that I've landed some good bream and big flathead with no worries.

Often I fish with 2lb Vanish on a 3 metre leader especially when the water is so clear with this drought.
I have taken off a lot of my spools with Green Fireline and put on my spools that I have with Smoke Fireline.
Even with a 3 metre leader I am thinking lately that the Green Fireline is spooking them more.
The water is so clear here even in the back sections of the lake.
Fishing 2lb I find that you definately get more hits and you also definately get busted off some times. Just make sure that your knots are perfect and are really well lubed, even go to the trouble like I do and hold them in a bucket of fresh water when you pull them up tight.

If you fish very light mono to the jig you are likely to lose a lot of the flathead you hook, their teeth wear through 4 and 6 lb mono easily. I used to lose a lot that way when fishing bait for bream on 4 lb line. When specifically targetting flatties I used 8 or 12 lb mono with a harder characteristic than the Maxima Ultragreen I usually used.

Hi Guys
I have been using the regular mono Platyous 100 8lb and found it to be great nice and soft with a hard core, i think its a co-polymer? I find that it has treated me well.
I havent had much dramas witht the flathead on it as i leave the flatties to trash there heads underwater as opposed to the top of the water. i do get busted up sometimes but retying is easy as.
Cheers

PS no need for biminis in between ir other gsp to mono knots

As I have said before , I enjoy the fight more than the size or number of fish, and have been using 1 kg maxima pre test for years. It realy is great fun and consistantly out fishes heavier line. But your drag and rod have to be matched to such light line!!! It requires a lot more skill than fishing 3 or 4 kg. But it is a lot more fun!!!!!!!!
Kurt Blanksby from WA here (1st Mandurah & 3rd Walpole) fishes 2 kilo mono straight through.
Plus last winter I was fishing with him when he hooked a 1.9kilo bream, it took him inside a jetty, pulled major string but he still pulled it out and landed it.....

I have a spare spool filled with 1.5kg mono but up till now have also used a 4lb leader of Vanish. It casts great and is well worth carrying for when the fish are shut down...

It is actually Berkley Sensation (a low stretch mono) that Bushy said he used in the article I mentioned. Any quality, limp, low stretch mono of appropriate breaking strain should be fine. I'm pretty sure that Berkley employs or sponsors Starlo and Bushy and that is why they keep mentioning the brand.

Fair Dinkum Pete ? Is that because its a US company?
Wouldn't you reckon that they would get some sponsorship milage there?

I use either Penn 10X or Harro's Lureline> I tie on a flourocarbon leader of about 5 ft. I find the Lureline a tad stiff, but both are very abrasion resistant, especially around the oysters.

Well my little experiment with using 4lb Vanish lasted only the first day of the comp, I top-shotted with 6lb Fireline that night for the next day!!!!
I could not 'feel' the jig when I was twitching and although I knew it was doing what it was supposed to I still wanted that little bit of feel and control. I wonder if I missed any very tentive touches? Probably not but the doubt was there. In fact all of the guys I was fishing with and staying with at the Clyde event stated that once you have used Fireline (or any braid/fused/gelspun) you never go back, now I can firmly say that I wont be:D ;)
Cheers
