hi guys

just a quick question- where abouts do you all measure your fish to? fork or tail?

i personally have been measuring them to the fork- thinking that this was the way they are measured in bream comps??? but today when i caught a 28cm fork bream, mitch reckons that it was 31cm because thats what it measured to the tail!

any thoughts???

cheers

I have been told to measure to the tail to see if a fish is legal size or not

The official yellow measuring rulers that you buy in the tackle stores here all say measure nose to tail.

And all the government sites that talk about bag limits and measurements talk about measuring to the tail, so that's what we all do.

cheers for that guys

i have always for some reason measured them to the fork- so some of my 37 and 38cm bream would have been over the 40cm and beyond!!!!

i will be changing my measuring method from now on!!!

Especially for the comps mate.

You planning on entering as a boater for Perth??

Ev, you can add 3 or 4cm to those mate, you have got 40 for sure, now to seek the elusive 50cm :D

Yep, the tip of their nose to the very very very tip of the tail for me :)

My thumb and my forefinger stretch to exactly 23 cm so thats a quick way to determine roughly the size of a fish for me. Anything that size or smaller I dont have to worry about the ruler.

Interesting technique Jim...I had to stop reading and immediately measure my own and only came up with 21cm.!! My wife has a theory about guys with long fingers too but thats another story and probably not too flattering for me if you guys are going 23.

In terms of measuring generally, I've always found the best method is to:

1. Loudly proclaim expert status to anyone who may be standing around.

2. Not get the tape out at all but just eyeball it and nominate it as "around 40".

3. Throw it back quick before anyone gets too curious.

Jim, I thought I had big hands, I seem to compared to most people. When I measured thumb to little finger I got 23cm, then I realised you said forefinger, measured mine at 21cm without it hurting. I think I'll just keep using a tape measure or ruler.

I just normally whip out my..........ruler and measure them. My span to little finger is 23 and to forefinger 19.5 cm :(

oops, I must apologize.......I said my forefinger, I should have said my MIDDLE finger the one you show during a road rage incident.

So to set the record straight my thumb to my middle finger is 23 cm and my thumb to my pinky is 25cm...........and that gents, is all the personal info ya gonna get ;)

Hehe, most amusing!

I've got a few score marks along the rod butt at 20, 25 and 30cm and a binding at 40cm for reference, it saves rummaging around in the bag for a tape - plus it doesn't matter if you forget the rule, you never forget your rod!

Hey Grant, that new avatar is the buisness - pity you opted for for a stealth back ground though ;)

I have got small hands and small feet

thats a great idea about the markings on the rod, but i think my rod but would be a bit short for it though.
