Hi all,
just wanted to check what size jighead do u use for a 3 inch hawg. Tried using a 1/24 for it but kinda of feel that it is flaoting a tad too much and sinks a little too slowly. what are ur suggestion and experience??

Havent fished with the hawgs much, but from what your saying, Id suggest simply moving up to a 1/16th jighead.
Out of interest though, is this slow drop rate such a bad thing? IMO it may help the lure represent a crab/critter (or whatever it is) better. It all depends on many variables though. So yeha, try a 1/16th jighead mate.

mate, imo 1/24 is too heavy,im not sure exactly wat type of structure ur fishing but if its round wharves, docks etc,i fish mine about 1/32 minimum, usually 1/64 and if they are really touchy unweighted, mainly cause of the drop when they are rigged so lightly, awesome:cool: ,hth.

i guess i must be so used to fishing with the bass minows i find the hawgs sinking too slow. I guess u guys are rite might consider dropping it down to a 1/30 and see what happens. Normally i try and fish the moored boats and during the windy season- which isnow. the boat tends to drift ard before the jig evengets any depth

moored boats and such are exactly where u want to have very little weight so it looks l9ike a dead crab/shrimp or mussle gut or something drifting down.ive had a couple of experiences where ive lowered one down right next to a pylon and a bream has come to slam it,but he goes at it with so much force that he has actually missed it:( holarious and a real bummer at the same time.

well u can just drop them down and a dead slow retrieve up then on the second drop as its going down sort of tap the line to impart more action on the sp,hth.

Lately I've been using 1/40oz HWS jigs on 3" Hawgs both with and without the "claws" cut off. This has worked well around boats, timber and marinas. Unweighted has resuted in a few fish also but they take ages to sink.
For my trevally I've been using 1/16oz - 1/12oz heads with the claws cut of the plastic.

marlin_dc, lures like that aren't really supposed to 'look' like anything specific. They just give out vibrations that are attractive to the fish because they're similar to something fluttering/scuttling about, and then give them a vague shape as a target. I think this is basically what most creature baits are about, though there are a few that really emulate yabbies and the like. In fact, most soft plastics are like this, they don't really look like anything the bream'd ever see, but they just move like/vibrate like one.
Cheers,

yeah,as owen said they represent nothing in preticular,it could be a dead mussel,a crab, some food that someone has thrown in the water, etc.it just has to get the breams attention, with its movement and the vibration it sends out,and hopefully that is what it does, hth.

The only time I use 2" Hawgs is unweighted on a worm hook. They look great in the water that way, but again they're slow to sink.
